Main Function & Scope:

The Energy Markets team are responsible for optimising and managing risk for Ventient’s pan European portfolio through structured power products. In addition to de-risking Ventient’s market exposure, the Energy Markets team maintain strong regulatory and related oversight across our active markets, support organic and inorganic (M&A) growth, and inform the wider Ventient business in relation to the energy markets considerations related to current and future strategy. Reporting to the Head of Energy Markets and Strategy, the Energy Markets Manager/analyst can also be involved in wider strategic initiatives.


The team are responsible for having a high-quality in-house understanding, interpretation and application of the value at risk (VAR) drivers from energy price and energy market factors in the short and longer term, and working alongside stakeholders, including procurement, in assessing and obtaining the best commercial arrangements for Ventient together with full compliance of our obligations as a Pan-European renewable energy generator.

This is a new role in a growing team that is key to Ventient’s long term strategy.


The purpose of this role will be to:

  • Build internal knowledge, perspective and both drive analysis and support corporate VAR on energy markets across the company’s geographies through quantitative and qualitative tools and research materials and third party sources, including published information from third parties to Ventient
  • Provide continuous support to the price risk management of Ventient’s assets
  • Provide insight and support to the growth plan, using price and non-price energy markets knowledge
  • Support the energy markets input to develop the strategy of Ventient


Key Responsibilities:

Energy Markets and Insights

  • Build internal knowledge and perspective on energy markets across the company’s geographies and translate it to clear insight to inform decision making
  • Develop strong knowledge and perspective of existing and new revenue components of our current and future assets, including regulated scheme potential (e.g., CfD, auctions, etc) across geographies
  • Understand third party price scenarios across geographies, the value drivers and assumptions behind them, differences between different advisors and the implications to Ventient’s financials and risk management
  • Research alternative business models (e.g., co-location, hydrogen, batteries) and their potential for Ventient’s business
  • Keep up to date with latest regulatory developments
  • Support analysis of traded positions, forward markets and underlying fundamentals through ownership of monitoring market data dashboards

Support to price risk management

  • Define with team the principles of a trading/hedging strategy to manage the price exposure of the Company’s existing and future assets, including clear actions and decision making calendars
  • Review and monitor current and future positioning of the Company relating to value at risk exposure opportunity and mitigation in line with business strategy
  • Value at risk – carry out and analyse current and potential sources of energy revenue and risk relating to current and potential new markets
  • Assess pricing risk strategies, market exposures and opportunities
  • Provide support in the tendering of new PPAs and other route to market products

Support to growth plan

  • Provide support to the organic growth plan, in particular market views, revenue stream forecast (power prices, route to market, etc), support to investment cases
  • Provide support to the inorganic growth/M&A pipeline of projects, including revenue stream forecast, support to investment cases
  • Generate insight to support growth through portfolio and ancillary additions to our wind portfolio, by reference to price, market structure and other evolving market-related insights

Support with energy markets input to develop the company strategy

  • Understand and assess the role of wind within the energy transition and the role of Ventient within the wind industry from a market perspective, currently and going forward
  • Provide insight, an assessment of risks and opportunities and an internal view of potential strategic alternatives beyond Ventient’s current core business to inform our strategy and growth plan going forward
  • Develop an internal view on new business models and technology potential and the implications for Ventient’s business (e.g., hydrogen, storage)


QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

  • Degree Qualified – Background in mathematics, economics, engineering or similar
  • High numerical and analytical ability


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • 5+ years of experience in energy markets: power market analysis, price curves and drivers, energy management (PPA, Route to Market) of wind assets
  • Experience within a utility, energy consulting, renewable player or analogous preferable in Iberia
  • Experience managing and leveraging third parties for maximum value add

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Energy Risk metrics, including VAR
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not essential


SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Essential:

  • Strong knowledge on energy price drivers across markets, particularly in UK and Iberia
  • Deep understanding of power markets and how the energy sector is evolving, particularly UK and Iberia
  • Strong understanding of revenue components for generators and their key drivers
  • Excellent analytical, organisation and planning skills
  • Ability to think strategically and work cross functionally in a professional environment
  • VAR awareness towards risk mitigation
  • Financial understanding (ability to link market analysis to financial outcomes)

Desirable:

  • Experience in energy markets on the rest of geographies within Ventient’s footprint: Germany, France, Belgium
  • Business case analysis relating to renewable solutions and economics beyond wind within energy markets, and co-location
