Main Function & Scope

The Lead Loads Engineer will act as a technical expert for loads analysis, leading a small team of specialists to deliver loads analysis services to the Ventient Energy Portfolio. You will be working closely with the wider Technical team to deliver loads analysis to support Life Extension, Performance Improvement, Acquisitions, and Root Cause Analysis workscopes. Ventient Energy has ambitious asset life and performance improvement targets, and this role will be front and centre in developing the team that will provide the technical analysis required to make informed decisions regarding asset operation.


Key Responsibilities

Relative Loads Analysis Process

  • Develop and manage in-house processes for completion of relative analysis using turbine-specific aeroelastic models:
  • Development of internal processes to complete wind and site analysis to produce suitable wind and site input data for loads analysis.
  • Reverse Engineering of Wind Turbines of all ages and IEC classes, developing high accuracy aeroelastic models within suitable modelling software.
  • Development of a process for reverse engineering of wind turbine rotor blade aerofoil characteristics.
  • Development of an aeroelastic model validation process, including real-world load measurements as required.
  • Site-Specific and Design load simulations as per IEC 61400-1.
  • Fatigue balancing of simulation outputs.
  • Working with the wider Technical Department to determine the documentation and reporting requirements.
  • Develop a plan to reduce the uncertainty associated with relative analysis.
  • In collaboration with IT, determine required tools, software and hardware required to execute and manage simulation data.


Loads Analysis Services

  • In conjunction with the wider Technical Department, plan and deliver loads analysis service:
  • Responsible for the delivery of all loads analysis projects, to schedule and budget.
  • Development and implementation of a loads analysis project tracker to give an overview of the status of each load analysis project.
  • Responsible for the delivery of all documentation and reporting requirements as defined by internal clients.
  • Long term forecasting and planning of future loads analysis service requirements.


Leadership and Management

  • Fully establish the Loads Analysis function, developing the necessary processes and procedures to ensure efficient delivery of loads analysis services across the pan-European Ventient portfolio.
  • Develop and manage the budget associated with loads analysis services.
  • Recruitment, development and retain a specialist loads analysis team.
  • Represent Ventient Energy at external conferences and working groups.


Life Extension Absolute Analysis

  • Development of a plan for insourcing of absolute analysis, including the required personnel and resources to complete absolute analysis.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong understanding of the design and certification process of wind turbines, as per IEC 61400 and GL guidelines.
  • Strong understanding and experience of aeroelastic modelling of wind turbines.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the life-extension statutory requirements across Europe.
  • Understanding of tools and methodology used for wind and site analysis
  • Knowledge of wind turbine aerodynamics and the tools available to model aerofoil polar curves.
  • Programming skills in Python/ Matlab
  • Experience in using version control to manage the development of programming scripts.


Relevant experience

Essential

  • Experienced user of Aeroelastic modelling tools, including the build and validation of new models.
  • Experience in completing relative analysis loads analysis studies.

Desirable

  • Management of a small technical team
  • Use of wind and site analysis tools
